WHAT DID THEY NEED?

Dr Ray and the Supersmile Orthodontist team had long outgrown their previous space, requiring a strategically acquired property and new purpose-built practice to attract and accommodate a higher volume of patients to enhance their ability to deliver outstanding patient care.

“We needed a company that would design the practice for us, someone that had runs on the board, someone that had produced large Orthodontic Practices in the past with glowing accolades.” – Dr Ray Te Mo

NAVIGATING ROADBLOCKS

While Dr Ray had an incredible vision for the future practice, the journey to making this a reality was longer than anticipated.

Town planning is an all-too-common hurdle in larger projects, particularly in regions such as the ACT, where the process can be lengthy and complex due to rigorous planning requirements, stakeholder involvement, and regulatory compliance. OPTIMA acted on the client’s behalf to take control, problem solve, work through and streamline the process.

Whether it was conducting detailed site assessments or negotiating modifications to align with council feedback, we were in the client’s corner every step of the way, so Dr Ray and the team could continue doing what they do best.

This should act as an eye-opener to practice owners considering a future healthcare build project – start the conversations with the experts earlier and take the stress out of the process.

“We met with Kerryn who was the Design Lead and she was really instrumental in the colours and the layout. As a team, we were able to get exactly what we were after. We wanted something that had wow factor, something that pops, something that patients and parents would be attracted to, and I think we achieved that.”

DESIGN FOR PURPOSE

While nailing the aesthetics is important, good design only works when it serves a purpose. We took the time to gain a deep understanding of the practice’s needs, knowing that they had long outgrown their existing facility.

Every element has been thoughtfully designed to enhance patient experience through innovative design and advanced functionality.

The new facility was meticulously planned to accommodate a higher volume of patients while maintaining the high standards of personalised care that Supersmile Orthodontics is known for. With eight treatment chairs spread across a five-chair open treatment area and three private rooms, the practice gained the capacity to manage more patients simultaneously without compromising on comfort or quality. This layout also allowed for better staff workflows, reducing bottlenecks and enhancing operational efficiency.

“We’ve got a really well-trained team and we’ve always performed at a good level, but we’ve almost been stifled by the fact that the old practice was smaller with less chairs.

We’ve now increased our capacity, we’ve got more chairs, a bigger area, and we don’t have any patients waiting. When patients come into the Practice they’re seen immediately and that’s due to the additional 3 chairs which has made a huge difference”.

We then brought Dr Ray’s vision to life – from the ground up.

The construction process began with extensive civil and drainage works to prepare the site, ensuring a solid foundation for the state-of-the-art facility.

From there, it was all systems go as the building took shape, with every stage—structural, electrical, and plumbing—carefully executed to meet our stringent quality standards.

The interior fitout was the final stage, transforming the physical structure into a fully functional orthodontic practice. This step included the installation of cutting-edge dental equipment, custom cabinetry, and patient-friendly furnishings, all chosen to balance aesthetics with function.

Now settled in to their new, state-of-the-art practice since opening the doors earlier this year, Dr Ray and the Supersmile Orthodontist team have been met with amazing feedback from parents and the younger patient demographic, while staff are loving coming to work in a spacious facility that allows them to best acheive the outstanding work they do.

The Supersmile Orthodontist build took 9 months, but the journey from initial consultation through to completion was a multifaceted journey that extended far beyond this construction phase. There are so many other critical steps along the way that need to be expertly handled before a stunning new healthcare practice is operational.
